About RITT

The Directorate of Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer has a Board comprising the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (ARSA), who serves as the Chairperson, and the Director, who serves as the Secretary to the Board. The Directorate is mandated to coordinate all research activities in the University; identify research needs and appropriate facilities; implement University research policies; and advise the Senate on general research issues affecting the University. It also ensures that University research is aligned with the Intellectual Property (IP) Policy, establishes research priorities, and ensures that all research conducted complies with the requirements of relevant regulatory agencies.

Mandate & Responsibilities

The Directorate of Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer is responsible for promoting, coordinating, supporting, and regulating research and innovation activities. Its role is to turn research into useful products and services that create knowledge, benefit society, and contribute to economic development.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all research activities in the University;
  • Identify needs and appropriate facilities for research in the University;
  • Implement the university research and advise Senate on the general research
  • issues affecting the university;
  • Ensure that the university research is aligned to the IP policy;
  • Establish research priorities for the University;
  • Ensure that the research carried out in the university is in line with the
  • requirements of the relevant regulatory agencies;
  • Recommend allocation of funds to Schools/Faculties/Institutes for use in
  • promotion of research activities in the University;
  • Receive and evaluate reports from the recipients of research grants through
  • their respective departments and Schools/Faculties/Institutes;
  • Publish the annual report on research and innovation in the University;
  • Organize special seminars for presentation of research findings and cause
  • the publication of the research findings;
  • Monitor use of research funds;
  • Disseminate research findings to the intended end users;
  • Liaise with Innovations and IP Rights Committee to identify patentable
  • research output;
  • Liaise with Innovations and Intellectual Property Rights Committee to pave
  • way for the incubation of developed research products;
  • Liaise with the relevant committee to cause the publicity of ground
  • breaking research findings;
  • Deal with any other matter that may be referred to it from time to time.

Training Opportunities

The university in collaboration with IPA conducted a training titled "Enhancing Capacity of African-Led Education Research Institutions to Produce Credible Evidence on the Education Ecosystem with Focus on Resilience/Socio-Emotional Learning."

Research Support Services

Tom Mboya University, being an academic institution acknowledges that research support service is one of the key services that it should provide in order to realize it's vision of knowledge creation and dissemination. As such, the institution is constantly checking and improving on the existing physical, training and financial support services need to promote research activities. The institution has also subscribed to a number of e-resources which are significant elements in a research process. We are currently working on a repository for theses, projects and other related research undertakings of the institution.

Institutional Commitments

In the spirit of continuous improvement and to streamline research processes, Tom Mboya University, in collaboration with the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI), ensures that all research proposals undergo the required approval processes. The University has established Institutional Research Review Committees at the Faculty level, within the Directorate of Postgraduate Studies, and within the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer. These institution-based review committees assess submitted research proposals and make timely recommendations to avoid delays that may hinder research activities or donor funding requirements. All submitted proposals are subjected to plagiarism checks before further processing.
