Message from the Director

The Directorate of Quality Assurance (DQA) is established by Tom Mboya University statute XXIII of 2022. The Directorate of Quality Assurance is managed by a director who is appointed by the Vice Chancellor from amongst persons holding a rank of senior lecturers or above for a period of two (2) years renewable for a further term of two years.

WHO WE ARE

About the Directorate

The Directorate of Quality Assurance (DQA) at Tom Mboya University was established under Statute XXIII of 2022. It plays a central role in maintaining and enhancing the quality of academic and administrative operations across the institution.

The Directorate is managed by a Director appointed by the Vice Chancellor from among senior lecturers or above, serving a two-year term renewable once. The current Director is Prof. Enose M.W. Simatwa, Associate Professor, who previously served as the founding Dean of the Faculty of Education from 2016 until November 2023.

Role of the Director

The Director of Quality Assurance serves as the Secretary to the Quality Assurance Board and reports directly to the Vice Chancellor. The Director leads initiatives aimed at enforcing academic standards, supporting compliance, and guiding institutional improvements across faculties and departments.

Composition of the Quality Assurance Board

  • Chairman of the Board – Appointed by the Vice Chancellor from senior lecturers or above
  • All Deans/Directors from Schools, Faculties, and Institutes
  • All Registrars of the University
  • Academic Staff Representatives
  • Director of Quality Assurance – Serves as Secretary to the Board

POLICIES AND STANDARDS OF OPERATION

Quality Standards

The Directorate Quality Assurance is charged with the responsibility of safeguarding the quality and standards of university educational provisions in accordance with the universities Vision, Mission, Motto and Core values. The Directorate Quality Assurance is responsible for the following functions:

a) Establishment of quality standards on management and activities for the university.

b) Provision of quality assurance and quality control of all academic programmes.

c) Coordination of the development and review of policies and operational manuals as well as instruments for use in internal evaluations, guiding universities academic and research quality assurance operations.

d) Coordination of the development of the university’s physical resources, and formulation and ensuring the implementation of the strategic plan and the performance of contract of the university.

The Quality Assurance section makes sure that procedures and programs are systematically reviewed to make sure they meet acceptable standards for teaching, learning, scholarship, and infrastructure. The Directorate has so far successfully completed an Institutional Quality Audit by CUE, facilitated the approval and accreditation of academic programs, trained staff and students in quality assurance, ensured student evaluation of courses, established a forum for class representatives, trained class representatives in leadership skills, ensured the auditing of graduation class marks and facilitated new staff orientation on quality assurance matters. Students and staff have been infused with a culture of transformative leadership, cooperation, and evidence-based decision-making. As a result, service delivery is now more efficient, and all processes are constantly being improved. The evidence of Directorate Quality Assurance output can be seen in the graduates of Tom Mboya University from Undergraduate to Postgraduate who are holding important positions in different sectors of the economy and providing excellent services. The awesome physical facilities, infrastructure and competent human resource at Tom Mboya University are also a testimony. The Directorate reaffirms its commitment to enhancing and maintaining quality standards at the university and congratulates the graduands of 2023.

The directorate uses mixed evaluation tools which include –

  • Course/Lecturer Evaluation through the student’s portal
  • Distribution of various physical and google form Questionnaires
  • Audits and observations
  • Consultative meetings
