About

WHO WE ARE

The University is traced to the Maseno University Learning Centre that was set up in Homa Bay town on 7th September 2010. Subsequent to a consultative meeting between the County Government of Homa Bay and Maseno University, a proposal to establish a university in the county was presented with the objective of increasing access to university education and taking education closer to the people to fulfil the constitutional requirement of establishing a university in every county.

In March 2015, an Ad-hoc committee made up of officials from the County Government of Homa Bay and Maseno University was set up to steer registration of Tom Mboya University College through Maseno University as a mentoring institution.

Tom Mboya University College (TMUC) was established through Legal Notice No. 55 in the Kenya Gazette Supplement No 45 of 8th April 2016 and opened its doors to start offering diploma and degree programmes anchored on those undertaken at Maseno University in areas of Education, Business & Economics, and Agriculture.

Having met the requirements in line with the Universities Act, 2012, the Commission for University Education (CUE) recommended the University for award of charter. On 2nd August 2022, Tom Mboya University (TMU) was awarded Charter by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Kenya, Hon. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, as a public university situated in Homa Bay County.

During the award of Charter, the Instruments of Authority as provided for in Section 65(1) of the Universities Act, 2012—i.e., the Mace, Seal, and Logo—were handed over to the University Council.
