Programme Description

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, WITH I.T.)

Faculty of Physical and Biological Sciences

Undergraduate

Course Description

This program combines agricultural economics with information technology to analyze and optimize agricultural systems using data-driven approaches. Students will study economic theories, policy analysis, and resource management while learning to apply computational tools, big data analytics, and digital modeling techniques to solve challenges in food systems, farm productivity, and agri-value chains. The curriculum integrates econometrics, agricultural policy, and market analysis with cutting-edge IT applications for agricultural decision-making.

Expectations

Students will master economic analysis techniques enhanced by IT tools, including statistical software (R, Stata), geospatial analysis platforms, and machine learning applications for agricultural datasets. The program emphasizes skills in designing data-driven farm management strategies, modeling climate-smart agricultural policies, and evaluating the economic impacts of precision agriculture technologies. Graduates will be equipped to transform raw agricultural data into actionable economic insights, optimize resource allocation through digital tools, and contribute to evidence-based agricultural policy development. They will emerge as tech-fluent agricultural economists capable of bridging the gap between farm-level decisions and macroeconomic trends in the digital age of agriculture.

Market Areas

Graduates are prepared for careers as agricultural data economists in government agencies, agri-financial analysts in banking and insurance sectors, market researchers for commodity trading firms, policy advisors using predictive modeling, and agribusiness consultants specializing in digital farm economics. Additional opportunities exist in international development organizations analyzing food security data, agricultural tech startups developing economic forecasting tools, and research institutions studying the impact of technology adoption in rural economies. Emerging roles include blockchain-based agricultural contract analysts, AI-driven crop pricing specialists, and sustainability economists for smart farming initiatives.
