SENATE OVERVIEW
As per Section 35 (1)(b) of the Tom Mboya University Charter, the Senate is the academic governing body responsible for all academic matters of the university, exercising the functions assigned to it in the University Charter.
Primary Role
The Senate exercises full responsibility over all academic work of the University.
Leadership
Chaired by the Vice-Chancellor with the DVC (Academic Affairs) as Secretary.
Authority
Can recommend withdrawal of degrees or academic privileges when warranted.
COMPOSITION OF THE SENATE
As per Section 19(1) of the Tom Mboya University Charter
University Leadership
- The Vice-Chancellor (Chairperson)
- The Deputy Vice-Chancellors
- The Principal of each Constituent College
- The Principal of each College and Campus
- The Registrars
Academic Leadership
- All Deans of faculties and Schools
- Directors of Institutes, Schools and Centres
- Associate Deans and Directors
- Chairpersons of Departments
- Full Professors of the University
Administration & Representation
- The University Librarian
- The Director of Finance
- The Corporation Secretary/Chief Legal Officer
- The Chief Medical Officer
- Two elected student representatives (non-voting on confidential matters)
- Other persons as Council may determine
Note: As per Section 19(4) of the Charter, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) serves as the Secretary to the Senate.
FUNCTIONS OF THE SENATE
As specified in Section 19 (3) of the Tom Mboya University Charter
Academic Standards
- Ensure content and standards of all academic programs
- Propose regulations for student admissions
- Set examination proficiency standards
Program Management
- Determine who qualifies for university awards
- Set academic calendar and program schedules
- Regulate examination conduct and approve results
Policy & Governance
- Establish Campus and Academic Boards
- Make regulations for academic awards and prizes
- Develop quality assurance systems
Academic Oversight
- Discontinue students on academic grounds
- Review proposals from academic units
- Recommend academic staff appointment criteria
Resource Planning
- Determine policy for library, labs, and teaching aids
- Review Statutes at least every five years
- Exercise other powers per the Charter and Statutes
COMMITTEES OF THE SENATE
As per Section 19 (6) of the Tom Mboya University Charter, the Senate may establish committees consisting of Senate members or other qualified persons as it deems appropriate.
Delegated Authority
The Senate may delegate any of its powers or functions to the Chairperson or to any of its committees to ensure efficient governance of academic matters.
