PS Eng. John Tanui Visits Tom Mboya University in a Strategic Digital Economy Engagement
Tom Mboya University, Homa Bay – The Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Eng. John Tanui, paid a courtesy visit to Tom Mboya University, underlining the government’s commitment to fostering digital transformation in higher education institutions and across local communities. During the visit, PS Tanui met with the university’s leadership, faculty, and student representatives to discuss collaborative opportunities that align with Kenya’s broader digital agenda. Key areas of focus included digital skills development, research and innovation, youth empowerment through technology, and infrastructure support for smart learning environments. “Tom Mboya University is well-positioned to become a digital hub for the lake region. We are keen to partner with institutions that are embracing innovation and preparing young people for a tech-driven economy,” said Eng. Tanui. The PS also explored ways the Ministry can support the university in scaling its ICT infrastructure and integrating digital solutions to improve academic delivery, research, and community engagement. Discussions also touched on the potential to integrate students into national digital economy projects such as Ajira Digital and Jitume Labs. The visit comes at a time when the government is intensifying efforts to decentralize digital opportunities and bridge the digital divide by investing in rural and peri-urban institutions. Vice Chancellor Prof. Charles Ocholla welcomed the PS’s visit, stating that the university was committed to aligning its programs with national development goals in the digital space. “We are excited to work closely with the Ministry to enhance our capacity, train our students for emerging tech jobs, and contribute to local innovation,” he noted.
